CHST practice questions: how many to do and how to review

There is no magic number of CHST practice questions, and anyone who gives you one is guessing. What predicts a good result is how well you review each question you miss, not how many you click through. This post gives you a routine that works for any candidate: how to split practice by domain, how to log every miss, and how to tell when your scores say you are ready. Start your baseline with the free 10-question check.

Why the count is the wrong goal

Doing 500 questions without reviewing is worse than doing 100 and learning from all of them. A question you got right for the wrong reason teaches nothing, and a question you got wrong and moved past teaches less. The exam is built to the blueprint, so the right plan covers the blueprint, with extra time where you are weak.

Split practice by the weights

BCSP's published domain weights are 36.6% for hazard and risk identification and control, 22.5% for safety program development, implementation and sustainment, 21% for leadership, communication and training, and 19.9% for emergency preparedness, incident investigation and response. Divide your practice the same way. If you do 100 questions in a week, about 37 should come from Domain 1, 22 or 23 from Domain 3, 21 from Domain 4 and 20 from Domain 2.

Then adjust. If your baseline shows Domain 4 is your weakest, give it more than its share for two weeks, and put it back to proportion once it catches up.

Emergency Preparedness, Incident Investigation, and Response

On a building under construction, what is the longest allowed travel distance from any point of the protected area to the nearest fire extinguisher?

Choose an answer to begin

A routine for each session

  1. Warm up with recall. Five minutes on the CHST flashcards for terms, subparts and formulas.
  2. Do a set of 10 to 20 questions in one domain. Work them without notes.
  3. Review every question, right or wrong. Read the explanation and the section number it cites. Open your own copy of 29 CFR 1926 and find the section.
  4. Log each miss. Use one line with the date, the domain, the topic and the cause.
  5. Re-do your misses three days later. If you get them right then, you learned. If you got them right the same day, you probably just remembered.

Log the cause of each miss

Use four labels:

  • Did not know it. The rule or concept is new. Study the topic.
  • Knew it, misread the stem. Slow down. Underline the question word, such as first, best or except.
  • Two answers were true. You need the hierarchy of controls or the sequence of actions. See the hierarchy of controls examples.
  • Ran out of focus. A stamina problem, which is fixed by timed practice in longer blocks.

After two weeks, count the labels. The biggest pile tells you what to practice next, and it is often not "more content."

Practice with the clock

BCSP allows 4 hours at a Pearson test center. Do at least two long sessions under timed conditions before your exam date, with a mix of all four domains and no pauses beyond what the real exam allows. Stamina and pacing are skills, and they show up only in long sessions. The practice test guide has worked examples with citations to sections by number.

When are you ready?

Do not look for a single magic score. Look for these signs together:

  • Your scores in every domain are steady across several sets, not one lucky set.
  • Your misses are mostly misreads, not missing knowledge.
  • You can name the section you would open for a given hazard, without searching.
  • Your timed sessions finish with time left for a second pass.

A single set tells you little because small sets are noisy. Trends over several sets tell you more.

Use only original, explained questions

Study with questions that are written to the blueprint and that explain why each answer is right and wrong. Avoid anything claiming to be real exam items. Candidates agree to keep exam content confidential, and recalled questions are often wrong or out of date.

Build the schedule

If you want the weeks laid out around your exam date, the CHST study plan builder turns your date and weekly hours into a split by domain.

FAQ

How many questions are on the real CHST?

We have not confirmed a count on a BCSP page, so we do not state one. Plan around the 4-hour time limit and the blueprint weights.

Should I repeat questions I already got right?

Revisit them after a gap. Right answers you cannot explain are not yet learned.

Is it better to practice by domain or mixed?

Start by domain to fix weak spots, then move to mixed sets as the exam gets closer.
