How the flashcards work

  • The deck has 58 cards: 34 terms and rules, 10 osha 1926 subparts, 9 formulas, 5 hazard controls.
  • By blueprint domain: 25 on hazard and risk identification and control; 12 on safety program development, implementation and sustainment; 9 on leadership, communication and training; 12 on emergency preparedness, incident investigation and response. Hazard identification and control gets the most cards because it carries the most weight in the blueprint.
  • Tap a card to flip it. After you see the answer, mark it "I know this" or "I don't know this yet".
  • Set Show to "Only cards I don't know" to drill your weak pile. Cards you mark known leave that pile.
  • Shuffle changes the order without changing which cards are in the deck. Filters by domain and card type let you work one area at a time.
  • Your marks are saved in your browser with no account. Nothing is sent to us.

OSHA rules are cited by section number only. Each card explains the rule in our own words, so read the section in your own copy of 29 CFR 1926 before you rely on a detail. Formula cards state the arithmetic as a study note; confirm every number against the governing standard or your equipment maker's data.

Worked example 1: a formula card, step by step

Card: "A two-leg sling holds a balanced load. How do you find the load on each leg?" Suppose the load is 2,000 lb and each leg makes a 60 degree angle with horizontal.

  • Sine of 60 degrees is about 0.866, so 2 × 0.866 = 1.732.
  • Leg load = 2,000 ÷ 1.732 = about 1,155 lb on each leg.
  • Drop the angle to 30 degrees and sine is 0.5, so each leg carries 2,000 lb, the whole load. That is why flatter slings are the trap.
  • Another quick one from the deck: a 16 ft working length puts the foot of a straight ladder 4 ft from the wall, a quarter of the length. Four hours at 90 dBA and two at 95 dBA give a noise dose of 1, a full 100%.

Worked example 2: a 15-minute round on the trench cards

You set the domain filter to hazard and risk identification and control and work the excavation cards: the Subpart P card, the protective system depth card and the trench exit card.

  • Subpart P covers excavations, with protective systems in 1926.652. You know that, so you mark it known.
  • The next card asks when a protective system is needed. You say 4 feet, flip it, and see it is 5 feet (1926.652(a)(1)). You mark it "I don't know this yet".
  • The trench exit card gives the 4 foot depth and 25 feet of lateral travel. You had mixed up the 4 and the 5. You mark it still learning too.
  • You switch Show to "Only cards I don't know". Two cards come up. You go through them until both are marked known, and they leave the pile.
  • You end the session with the free 10-question check to see whether the numbers hold up inside scenario questions.

Cards build recall, and questions test whether you can use it. Map your weeks with the CHST study plan builder, then take the CHST practice test questions with explained answers. The CHST exam outline shows how the four domains are weighted.

CHST flashcard questions

Are these the real CHST exam questions?

No. Every card is written for this site in our own words to match the topics in BCSP's published blueprint. We never use real or recalled exam items, and BCSP does not share its exam content. Use the cards to learn the material, then test yourself with the free 10-question check.

Do I have to memorize OSHA 1926 section numbers for the CHST?

The blueprint tells you what the exam covers, and the cards help you connect each hazard to the subpart that governs it. That habit makes scenario questions easier to reason through and helps you find the rule fast on the job. Learn what each section is for, then read the rule itself in your own copy of 29 CFR 1926.

Will my know and don't-know marks be saved, and does it work on my phone?

Yes on both. Your marks are stored in your browser on the device you use, with no account, so they are there when you come back. Clearing your browser data or switching devices starts you fresh, and the reset button clears them any time.
