CHST exam results, retakes and renewal
BCSP's CHST page says your result shows on screen right after you submit the exam. That is the one thing to settle before you sit: you will know the same day. This guide covers what the result means, the retake rules and what comes after a pass.
How results are reported
BCSP reports a pass or a fail against a minimum passing score. BCSP's credentials sheet says passing scores can change without advance notice, and we do not state a number: use BCSP's current material for how results are reported. Keep your result record with your application papers, since employers and clients may ask for it.
BCSP also says some items on its exams are unscored developmental items, and you cannot tell which. That is a reason to treat every question as if it counts, and a reason not to turn a practice percentage into a promise. A practice score is a different measurement from BCSP's result, so use it to find weak domains and nothing else.

The retake rule
If you do not pass, you can retake no sooner than six weeks after your last attempt, per BCSP's CHST page. Plan for a new exam fee unless BCSP tells you otherwise. The fee is $300 on BCSP's credentials sheet, and the sheet also lists an exam bundle with two attempts at $550. The cost and scheduling guide has the full fee table.
Your one-year window to schedule and pass starts when BCSP approves your application. It keeps running between attempts, so check how much of it is left before you rebook. If you are within 60 days of the deadline, an eligibility extension is available at the listed $100.
Turn six weeks into a plan
Six weeks is enough for a focused fix if you spend it on the right domain.
- Week 1: sort the misses. Write down what you remember in general terms: the topics, not the questions. Respect exam confidentiality. Then compare those topics with the four domains and weights.
- Weeks 2 to 4: work the heaviest weak domain. If it is hazard and risk identification and control (36.6%), go through the OSHA guides one subpart at a time, starting with fall protection. If it is safety program development (22.5%), start with recordkeeping.
- Week 5: timed mixed practice. Sit a full 4-hour session and review each miss by cause: unfamiliar rule, misread stem, two true options or fatigue.
- Week 6: light review, then book. Book once your timed practice is where you want it. The study guide has the full routine.
After you pass
BCSP's credentials sheet lists a five-year recertification cycle for the CHST: 20 points, including 0.5 points from ethics courses, and a $150 renewal fee. Check BCSP's current rules for what earns points. Passing opens the door to the next BCSP step too. See CHST vs CSP vs ASP for how the credentials compare.
